Can you imagine a world without music? We have music at home, music in elevators,
music in operating rooms,
music on our phones, music when lifting weights or running, music
in our cars. Who of us is not guilty of
singing along with a song in the car? Maybe
even at full volume.
Music
stirs emotions. Music is the natural
response to God’s blessings. Moses and
Miriam, Mary and Simeon are just a few of many believers that have lifted their
voices in song out of gratitude to God.
The word of Christ hits the senses and brings forth in man, woman, and
child joy that expresses itself in song.
What
an awesome thing to worship God being led by a new organ. An organ that will lead us in singing hymns,
songs, and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts for a far greater
gift—God’s Son, through whom we receive forgiveness of sin righteousness, yes,
even eternal life.
Why an
organ? Why not a guitar? That would have been a lot cheaper. Why not a trumpet, a trombone, why not
symbols or a drum set? We could use any
of these instruments in worship, but the organ has certain characteristics that
make it especially beneficial for leading a congregation in worship.
The
versatility and depth of sound from an organ far surpasses that of most other
instruments. The range of volume can
accompany a soloist to thousands of worshippers. An organ can faithfully unite a congregation
in singing the somber songs of Lent and the joyous songs of Christmas and
Easter. The organ brings order to a
service as all join together in singing God’s praises.
Together
with a rich hymnody that has faithfully proclaimed the good news of Jesus
Christ and the truths of the Holy Scriptures, the
organ has assisted in building up the faith of countless worshipers through the
centuries. Even today, as an organ plays the melody of a hymn, words can be
recalled—words through which God himself is working to bless and save. The
music of the organ has carried God’s words to people. It has helped people
voice their prayers and praise to God. It has encouraged people to sing and
make music in their hearts to God, teaching and admonishing one another with
psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.
So
sing, my friends, sing with gratitude in your hearts to God.
